The Festival of Making, Blackburn

PlaceShakers launched the MakerShed design competition for architecture and design students to create a small, simple structure to house a making

activity. Hawkins\Brown assembled myself and two other Part 1’s to design, build and project manage the MakerShed project.

The form of the structure and its apertures reference the Old Market Hall and Clock Tower that once stood in the heart of Blackburn where makers and stallholders thrived in the busy market square.

I took on the role of lead designer of the structure, utilising contemporary modes of digital fabrication, including CNC routing and vinyl laser cutting,

and coordinating the manufacturing, design and assembling the components on-site. The structure was inspired by the pattern making by the textile makers within, creating a series of components, easily legible for the festival goes to understand the construction and to celebrate the joy of making.
